What is a Silver Maple Leaf?

The silver Maple Leaf is a Canadian bullion coin of one troy ounce (31.1035 grams) of silver at 9999 fine, struck by the Royal Canadian Mint since 1988. Its face value is 5 Canadian dollars; its real value is the silver price plus a premium.

Since 2014 the coin carries a radial line pattern and a laser-engraved micro maple leaf with the year as security features, and since 2018 the MINTSHIELD treatment against milk spots, the white haze that earlier silver coins often show.

History

Canada released the silver Maple Leaf in 1988, nine years after the gold one. Its 9999 fineness was the highest of any bullion coin at the time and still is; most competitors such as the Philharmonic and the American Eagle are 999. The coin is traded in tubes of 25 and monster boxes of 500, which has made it a standard unit in the silver trade.

Buying, selling, VAT and tax

Premium and VAT. Silver carries 21 % VAT in the Netherlands and Belgium, on top of a premium that is much higher in percent for silver coins than for gold: the coin is cheap, the minting is not. Dealers selling under the margin scheme charge VAT only on their margin, which lowers the price considerably; ask. When selling you receive a percentage of the silver value, close to 100 % for pristine coins.

Tax. Physical silver counts as a box 3 asset in the Netherlands on 1 January. Information, not advice.

Storage. Silver tarnishes and older Maple Leafs develop milk spots; that changes nothing about the fine weight, but keep coins dry and in their tube or capsule.

FAQ: Silver Maple Leaf

How much is a silver Maple Leaf worth?

The silver price per gram times 31.1035; that value is shown live at the top of this page. Premium and VAT come on top when buying; you receive a percentage of the silver value when selling.

Why is the purchase price so much higher than the silver value?

Because of 21 % VAT and a premium for striking and distributing a coin worth a few tens of euros. In percent that is far more than for gold. Under the margin scheme the gap is smaller.

What are milk spots?

A white haze that can appear on silver coins from residues of the production process. It does not affect the silver value, only the collector value. Since 2018 the Maple Leaf has a treatment against it.

How do I check authenticity?

Weight 31.10 g, diameter 38.0 mm, the laser-engraved micro maple leaf with the year and the radial line pattern. A magnet must do nothing.

How many Maple Leafs are in a tube?

25; a monster box holds 20 tubes, so 500 coins and more than 15.5 kilos of silver.

Source and method

The metal value is the fine weight times the spot price per gram, fetched every minute from metals.dev and converted to euro at ECB rates. See the silver price page for the chart going back ten years. Amounts are indicative; dealers charge a premium over spot and pay around or below spot when buying. Aevumex sells no metal and gives no advice.
