Silver price

What is the silver price?

The silver price is the spot price of one unit of pure silver on the world market for immediate delivery, quoted internationally in dollars per troy ounce and converted here to euro per gram, per ounce and per kilo at the European Central Bank reference rate.

Silver is half precious metal, half industrial metal. About half of annual demand comes from solar panels, electronics, electric vehicles and medical uses; the other half from coins, bars, jewellery and silverware. The silver price therefore tends to move with gold, but with larger swings in both directions.

What is your silver worth today?

The values below are the silver value at the current price: fine weight times spot per gram. Sterling silver is 925 fine, so a 31.1 g sterling piece holds 28.8 g of pure silver. When buying, VAT and a premium come on top; when selling scrap silver you usually receive a percentage of the metal value.

Silver price per gram, per troy ounce and per kilo

Internationally silver is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 grams). Dealers in the Netherlands and Belgium quote in euro per gram or per kilo. All three units sit side by side at the top of this page, and the buttons by the chart switch the whole chart. Conversion to euro uses the European Central Bank reference rate, so the euro price can rise while the dollar price is flat, and the other way round.

Why the silver price moves

  • The gold price. Silver follows gold on the big picture: the same rate, dollar and confidence factors, with leverage. In percent, silver often moves two to three times as far.
  • Industry. Solar panels are the fastest-growing user, followed by electronics, electric vehicles and solder. A growing economy supports demand; a recession dents it.
  • By-product supply. Most silver comes out of copper, lead and zinc mines. Mines do not run harder because silver gets dearer, so supply responds slowly and deficits can last.
  • The gold-silver ratio. How many grams of silver buy one gram of gold? Historically between 40 and 90. A high ratio is read as "silver is cheap against gold" and attracts buyers.
  • Speculation. The silver market is small. Futures positioning and social-media attention can move the price sharply within days.

Buying and selling silver: premium, VAT and tax

Premium and VAT. Silver carries 21 % VAT in the Netherlands and Belgium on top of the dealer's premium, so the gap between purchase price and metal value is larger than for gold. Some dealers sell silver under the margin scheme, charging VAT only on their margin; always ask.

Selling. A dealer pays a percentage of spot, closer to 100 % for bullion coins than for scrap and cutlery. The scrap calculator in the Aevumex app converts the fine weight of a 925 or 800 piece to today's price.

Tax. Physical silver counts as an asset in Dutch box 3; the gain itself is not taxed. Belgium taxes no gain within normal management of private assets; Germany applies the one-year rule. Information, not advice.

The silver price over the years

Silver has sharper peaks and deeper troughs than gold. After the speculative spike of 1980 it took thirty years for the dollar price to reach that level again, in 2011, followed by a long decline. From 2020 demand from solar and electronics picked up while mine supply lagged, lifting the price structurally. Pick 5Y or 10Y in the chart to see how silver magnifies gold's moves.

Frequently asked questions about the silver price

What is the silver price today?

Today's silver price is at the top of the page in euro per gram, per troy ounce and per kilo, refreshed every minute. The table shows the silver value of a Maple Leaf, a sterling coin or a kilo bar.

How much is 1 kilo of silver?

The kilo price is at the top of this page and equals the gram price times a thousand. A dealer adds a premium and 21 % VAT unless the piece is sold under the margin scheme.

Why does silver move more than gold?

The silver market is far smaller and half of demand is industrial. The same investor inflow has a bigger effect, and in a recession industrial demand drops while gold is unaffected.

Do I pay VAT on silver?

Yes, 21 % in the Netherlands and Belgium, unless the dealer sells under the margin scheme. Investment gold is VAT-exempt, one reason investors treat the two metals differently.

What is the gold-silver ratio?

The grams of silver one gram of gold buys, i.e. the gold price divided by the silver price. The Aevumex app shows the ratio as its own chart with the same periods as here.

Can I get an alert at a certain silver price?

Yes. In the Aevumex app you set a price alert above or below a price per gram, free up to two alerts and unlimited with Pro.
