Palladium price

What is the palladium price?

The palladium price is the spot price of pure palladium on the world market, quoted in dollars per troy ounce and converted here to euro per gram, per ounce and per kilo at the ECB reference rate.

Palladium is a silvery-white metal of the platinum group. More than eighty percent of demand goes into catalytic converters for petrol and hybrid cars; the rest into electronics, dentistry and jewellery. Supply is concentrated in Russia and South Africa, which makes the market small, illiquid and sensitive to news.

What is your palladium worth today?

The values below are the metal value at the current palladium price: fine weight times spot per gram. The range of palladium bullion is small; the Canadian Maple Leaf and bars from recognised refiners are the most common. VAT and a relatively high premium come on top when buying.

Palladium price per gram, per troy ounce and per kilo

Internationally palladium is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 grams). Dealers in the Netherlands and Belgium quote in euro per gram or per kilo. All three units sit side by side at the top of this page, and the buttons by the chart switch the whole chart. Conversion to euro uses the European Central Bank reference rate, so the euro price can rise while the dollar price is flat, and the other way round.

Why the palladium price moves

  • Car production. Every petrol or hybrid car holds a few grams of palladium. More cars and stricter emission rules mean more demand; a dip in car sales hits the price at once.
  • Electric cars. A fully electric car has no catalytic converter. The faster the switch, the weaker long-term demand; that is the biggest structural headwind.
  • Russia and South Africa. Together they provide most mine supply. Sanctions, strikes and power shortages can move the price sharply within days.
  • Substitution. When palladium is far dearer than platinum, manufacturers replace part of it, which caps the price after a strong rise.
  • Recycling. Old converters supply a growing share and soften deficits.

Buying and selling palladium: premium, VAT and tax

Premium and VAT. Palladium carries 21 % VAT in the Netherlands and Belgium. The market for coins and bars is small, so premiums and spreads are higher than for gold and silver. Not every dealer buys palladium; compare before you buy or sell.

Tax. Physical palladium counts as an asset in Dutch box 3; Belgium taxes no gain within normal private asset management; Germany applies the one-year rule. Information, not advice.

The palladium price over the years

Palladium was long the cheapest metal of the platinum group, until stricter emission rules and the shift from diesel to petrol made demand explode from 2016. The price climbed above gold and platinum within a few years, peaking in 2022 around the sanctions on Russia. It then fell hard as car makers switched to platinum and electric cars gained share. Frequently asked questions about the palladium price

What is the palladium price today?

Today's palladium price is at the top of this page in euro per gram, per troy ounce and per kilo, refreshed every minute from the metals.dev spot price.

What is palladium used for?

Mainly catalytic converters in petrol and hybrid cars, which make up more than eighty percent of demand. Also electronics, dentistry and white-gold jewellery.

Why is palladium so volatile?

The market is small and supply comes from two countries. One strike report from South Africa or one sanction on Russia can move the price by percents in a day.

Do I pay VAT on palladium?

Yes, 21 % in the Netherlands and Belgium. Only investment gold is exempt.

Is palladium a good investment?

That is a personal decision Aevumex does not make for you. What the numbers say: it is the smallest and most volatile market of the five metals on this site, structurally dependent on the combustion engine.

Can I get an alert at a certain palladium price?

Yes. In the Aevumex app you set a price alert per metal, above or below a price per gram. Free up to two alerts.
