Platinum price today
The current platinum price in euro, refreshed every minute from the spot market. Per gram, per troy ounce and per kilo, with a chart up to ten years back, today's metal value of platinum coins and bars, and why this rare metal has traded below gold for years.
What is the platinum price?
The platinum price is the spot price of pure platinum on the world market, quoted in dollars per troy ounce and converted here to euro per gram, per ounce and per kilo at the ECB reference rate.
Platinum is roughly thirty times rarer than gold and mostly used industrially: in diesel catalytic converters, in the glass and chemical industries, in jewellery and increasingly in electrolysers and fuel cells for hydrogen. More than two thirds of mine supply comes from South Africa, where power shortages and strikes affect output.
What is your platinum worth today?
The values below are the metal value at the current platinum price: fine weight times spot per gram. Platinum coins and bars are almost always 999.5 fine. VAT and a premium come on top when buying, and the premium is higher than for gold because the market is smaller.
| Coin or bar | Fine weight | Metal value now |
|---|---|---|
| Platinum Maple Leaf or Philharmonic (1 oz, 999.5) | 31.1035 g | — |
| 1 gram bar | 1 g | — |
| 10 gram bar | 10 g | — |
| 1 troy ounce bar | 31.1035 g | — |
| 100 gram bar | 100 g | — |
| 1 kilo bar | 1000 g | — |
Platinum price per gram, per troy ounce and per kilo
Internationally platinum is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 grams). Dealers in the Netherlands and Belgium quote in euro per gram or per kilo. All three units sit side by side at the top of this page, and the buttons by the chart switch the whole chart. Conversion to euro uses the European Central Bank reference rate, so the euro price can rise while the dollar price is flat, and the other way round.
Why the platinum price moves
- Car sales and emission rules. Diesel catalysts are the largest user. Stricter rules need more platinum per car; the shift from diesel to petrol and electric weighs on demand.
- Substitution with palladium. Petrol catalysts use palladium. When palladium gets far dearer than platinum, manufacturers partly switch to platinum, and vice versa, so the two prices pull each other over the years.
- South Africa. Power cuts, strikes and mine closures at the largest producer squeeze supply immediately. Russia is the second producer, with sanctions as an extra uncertainty.
- Hydrogen. Electrolysers and fuel cells use platinum. How fast the hydrogen economy grows sets long-term demand.
- Investors. Because platinum has traded below gold for years, investors buy it as a relatively cheap alternative; that inflow is erratic.
Buying and selling platinum: premium, VAT and tax
Premium and VAT. Platinum carries VAT (21 %) in the Netherlands and Belgium, on top of a premium that is higher than for gold because the market is smaller. Coin choice is limited to a few series such as the Maple Leaf and the Philharmonic; bars are more widely available.
Selling. Fewer dealers buy platinum than gold and the spread is wider, so compare bids before you sell.
Tax. Physical platinum counts as an asset in Dutch box 3; Belgium taxes no gain within normal private asset management; Germany applies the one-year rule. Information, not advice.
The platinum price over the years
Until 2008 platinum was structurally dearer than gold, peaking when diesel demand and South African supply risk coincided. After the 2015 diesel scandal and the rise of electric cars the platinum price fell below gold and stayed there. In recent years supply deficits and hydrogen demand have brought a recovery. Pick 5Y or 10Y in the chart to see that path.

Frequently asked questions about the platinum price
What is the platinum price today?
Today's platinum price is at the top of this page in euro per gram, per troy ounce and per kilo, refreshed every minute from the metals.dev spot price.
Why is platinum cheaper than gold if it is rarer?
Rarity alone does not set the price; demand does too. Platinum is mainly an industrial metal tied to diesel cars, while gold is a monetary asset held by central banks and investors worldwide. Since 2015 weak diesel demand has outweighed scarcity.
How much is 1 gram of platinum?
The per-gram price is at the top of the page. A dealer adds VAT and a premium; small bars of 1 or 5 grams carry the highest premium in percent.
Do I pay VAT on platinum?
Yes, 21 % in the Netherlands and Belgium. The investment-gold exemption does not apply to platinum.
Where does platinum come from?
More than two thirds from South Africa, then Russia and Zimbabwe. Recycling of old catalytic converters supplies a growing share.
Can I get an alert at a certain platinum price?
Yes. In the Aevumex app you set a price alert per metal, above or below a price per gram. Free up to two alerts.
