Copper price today
The current copper price in euro, refreshed every minute from the spot market. Per kilo, per gram and per troy ounce, with a chart, today's metal value of copper bars, and why copper is called the barometer of the world economy.
What is the copper price?
The copper price is the spot price of pure copper on the world market, quoted internationally in dollars per tonne and converted here to euro per kilo, per gram and per troy ounce at the ECB reference rate. Unlike gold, the unit that matters is the kilo, not the gram.
Copper is not a precious metal but the most important industrial metal in the world, and increasingly part of a metals portfolio. Power grids, wind turbines, solar farms, data centres, electric vehicles and construction all need copper. Because demand is so broad, the copper price is read as a gauge of the economy: "Dr. Copper".
What is your copper worth today?
The values below are the metal value at the current copper price. For collector bars and rounds the retail price sits far above metal value because of minting, packaging and VAT; anyone following copper as a commodity looks at the kilo price.
| Coin or bar | Fine weight | Metal value now |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kilo copper bar (999) | 1000 g | — |
| 5 kilo copper bar | 5000 g | — |
| 10 kilo copper bar | 10000 g | — |
| 1 troy ounce copper round | 31.1035 g | — |
| 100 gram copper bar | 100 g | — |
Copper price per gram, per troy ounce and per kilo
Internationally copper is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 grams), copper per tonne. Dealers in the Netherlands and Belgium quote in euro per gram or per kilo. All three units sit side by side at the top of this page, and the buttons by the chart switch the whole chart. Conversion to euro uses the European Central Bank reference rate, so the euro price can rise while the dollar price is flat, and the other way round.
Why the copper price moves
- China. The world's largest consumer. Construction, grid expansion and industrial output in China set a large share of demand, and Chinese inventory figures move the price.
- Electrification. Electric vehicles, chargers, wind turbines, solar farms and data centres use far more copper than their fossil predecessors. That is the structural growth engine.
- Mine supply. A new copper mine takes ten to fifteen years from discovery to production. Supply responds slowly, and disruptions in Chile, Peru or Congo feed through at once.
- The dollar and rates. Copper trades in dollars; a weak dollar and low rates support the price, as with precious metals, but the business cycle weighs more.
- Inventories and speculation. Warehouse stocks at the metal exchanges in London, Shanghai and New York are a daily gauge of tightness.
Buying and selling copper: premium, VAT and tax
Buying. For individuals physical copper is mostly a collector's item: bars and rounds from 100 grams to 10 kilos, priced well above metal value because of fabrication and 21 % VAT. Anyone following the copper price itself uses the kilo price on this page.
Selling. Scrap copper (pipes, cables) is bought by metal merchants per kilo at a percentage of the price, depending on purity and quantity.
Tax. Physical copper counts as an asset in Dutch box 3. Information, not advice.
The copper price over the years
The copper price follows the world economy in waves: China's construction boom of the 2000s, the 2008 crash, the recovery after it and the sharp rise from 2020 on electrification and lagging mine supply. Our own record starts when Aevumex launched, because the price source provides no history for copper; the chart grows every day.

Frequently asked questions about the copper price
What is the copper price today?
Today's copper price is at the top of this page in euro per kilo, per gram and per troy ounce, refreshed every minute from the metals.dev spot price.
How much is 1 kilo of copper?
The kilo price is at the top of the page. Scrap copper fetches a percentage of that at a metal merchant; a collector bar costs a multiple because of fabrication and VAT.
Why is copper called "Dr. Copper"?
Because the copper price often shows earlier than other figures whether the world economy is picking up or cooling down: almost every sector uses copper, so demand moves with the cycle.
Why does the copper chart start so recently?
The price source provides a live copper price but no history. Aevumex has stored the price every minute since launch, so the chart gets longer every day.
Is copper a precious metal?
No. Copper is a base metal. It is on this site because many stackers hold it alongside gold and silver, and because the Aevumex app takes it as the fifth metal in your vault.
Can I get an alert at a certain copper price?
Yes. In the Aevumex app you set a price alert per metal. For copper you enter the price per gram with four decimals.
