What is the gold price?

The gold price is the price at which one unit of pure gold trades right now on the world market for immediate delivery, the spot price. Internationally it is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce; dealers in the Netherlands and Belgium quote in euro per gram or per kilo. The price on this page is that spot price converted to euro at the European Central Bank reference rate.

Gold is the only metal central banks hold as a reserve and the one investors worldwide treat as a safe haven. That is why the gold price behaves unlike industrial metals: it follows interest rates, the dollar and trust in the financial system, and hardly the business cycle.

What is your gold worth today?

The values below are the metal value of a coin or bar at the current gold price: fine weight times spot per gram. A Krugerrand weighs 33.93 g but contains 31.10 g of fine gold; a Sovereign weighs 7.98 g with 7.32 g fine. A dealer charges a premium above this when you buy and usually pays slightly below it when you sell.

Gold price per gram, per troy ounce and per kilo

Internationally gold is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 grams). Dealers in the Netherlands and Belgium quote in euro per gram or per kilo. All three units sit side by side at the top of this page, and the buttons by the chart switch the whole chart. Conversion to euro uses the European Central Bank reference rate, so the euro price can rise while the dollar price is flat, and the other way round.

Why the gold price moves

  • Real interest rates. Gold pays no interest. When rates after inflation rise, saving becomes more attractive and gold often falls; falling real rates lift it. Historically the strongest driver.
  • The US dollar. Gold is priced in dollars. A weaker dollar makes gold cheaper for buyers outside the US and pushes the dollar price up. For the euro price the euro-dollar rate comes on top: gold can rise in dollars and stay flat in euro.
  • Central banks. Since 2022 central banks, especially in emerging economies, have bought exceptional amounts of gold to depend less on the dollar. That demand puts a floor under the market.
  • Inflation and trust. When inflation expectations climb or confidence in public debt and banks wavers, investors look for an asset nobody can print.
  • Geopolitics. War, sanctions and trade conflicts push money into gold, usually fast and sometimes back out just as fast.
  • Jewellery and funds. Jewellery demand from India and China is seasonal; flows in and out of gold ETFs amplify short-term moves.

Buying and selling gold: premium, VAT and tax

Premium. A gold coin or bar costs more at a dealer than its metal value. The premium covers minting or casting, transport, insurance and margin, and is higher in percent for small pieces than for kilo bars. When selling you usually receive slightly below spot; the gap between the two is the spread.

VAT. Investment gold is VAT-exempt across the EU: bars and wafers of at least 995 fine, and coins minted after 1800 that are or were legal tender, at least 900 fine and normally sold at no more than 80 % above their gold value. Practically all well-known bullion coins qualify.

Tax. In the Netherlands physical gold counts as an asset in box 3 on 1 January; the gain itself is not taxed. In Belgium gains on gold within normal management of private assets are untaxed for individuals; in Germany a sale after one year of holding is tax-free. The Aevumex app produces a report for eight countries. This is information, not tax or investment advice.

The gold price over the years

The gold price moves in long waves. After the gold standard was abandoned in 1971 the price rose tenfold in a decade, then fell and drifted sideways for twenty years. The 2008 financial crisis and the rate cuts that followed brought a new rise; after a dip in the middle of the last decade, the pandemic, the 2022 inflation wave and central bank buying carried the euro price to new records. The chart above goes back ten years in daily closes; pick 5Y or 10Y to see those waves.

Frequently asked questions about the gold price

What is the gold price today?

Today's gold price is at the top of this page in euro per gram, per troy ounce and per kilo, refreshed every minute from the metals.dev spot price. The table shows the gold value of a Krugerrand, Maple Leaf or Sovereign.

How much is 1 gram of gold?

The price of one gram of pure gold is the per-gram figure at the top of this page. A dealer adds a premium; a small piece such as a one-gram bar carries a higher premium in percent than a 100-gram bar.

What is the gold price per troy ounce?

A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams. The ounce price is the gram price times that number and is shown at the top of the page. Internationally you usually hear the dollar price per ounce.

Why does the gold price rise or fall?

Mainly real interest rates, the dollar, central bank buying, inflation expectations and geopolitical tension. For the euro price the euro-dollar rate matters too. Jewellery demand and funds amplify short-term moves.

Does the gold price change at the weekend?

No. The spot market trades almost around the clock on weekdays, but from Friday evening to Sunday evening trading stops. The price does not move and the day chart shows a flat line.

Do I pay VAT on gold?

Not on investment gold: bars of at least 995 fine and recognised coins such as the Krugerrand, Maple Leaf and Sovereign are exempt in the EU. Silver, platinum and palladium do carry VAT.

Can I get an alert at a certain gold price?

Yes. In the Aevumex app you set a price alert above or below a price per gram, and with Pro also on the value of your whole vault or a drawn trend line. Free up to two alerts.
