What is a 1 kg silver bar?
A 1 kilo silver bar contains 1000 grams of silver at 999 fine or better, cast or minted by a refiner such as Umicore, Heraeus, Valcambi or Argor-Heraeus. The bar carries its weight, fineness, the refiner's logo and usually a serial number. Its value is the silver price per gram times a thousand, plus a premium.
Silver is traded per kilo in the Netherlands and Belgium where gold is traded per gram: at current prices a kilo of silver costs roughly a tenth of an ounce of gold.

History
Bars are the oldest form of investing in silver: no minting cost, no face value, only metal. The kilo bar became the European standard because it stays manageable and the premium per gram is low; the 15 kg bar is the industrial unit. Since VAT on silver rose in the Netherlands (from 6 to 19 % in 1995 and later 21 %), many private buyers purchase silver bars under the margin scheme or abroad.
Buying, selling, VAT and tax
Premium. Of all silver products the kilo bar carries the lowest premium in percent: there is no coin to strike. Cast bars are cheaper than minted ones, and a bar from a well-known refiner with a serial number is easier to sell.
VAT and the margin scheme. Silver carries 21 % VAT in the Netherlands and Belgium. Dealers selling under the margin scheme charge VAT only on their margin; the bar then comes without a VAT invoice and the price is considerably lower. Always ask which scheme applies.
Selling and tax. A dealer pays around or slightly below spot; a bar with certificate and intact packaging fetches the most. Physical silver counts as a box 3 asset in the Netherlands on 1 January. Information, not advice.

FAQ: 1 kg silver bar
What does 1 kilo of silver cost?
The silver value is the silver price per gram times a thousand and is shown live at the top of this page. The dealer price is higher because of the premium and 21 % VAT, unless sold under the margin scheme.
Cast or minted bar?
Cast bars are rougher and cheaper; minted bars are smooth, packaged and carry a slightly higher premium. For the silver value it makes no difference.
What is the margin scheme?
A VAT scheme for second-hand goods under which the dealer charges VAT only on the margin. Silver bought back from private owners can be offered much cheaper this way.
How do I sell a kilo bar?
To a bullion dealer, who pays around spot, or to another stacker, for instance through the marketplace in the Aevumex app. Keep the certificate and packaging with the bar.
How much is a 5 kg bar worth?
Five thousand grams times the silver price per gram; the live amount is in the table on this page.

Source and method
The metal value is the fine weight times the spot price per gram, fetched every minute from metals.dev and converted to euro at ECB rates. See the silver price page for the chart going back ten years. Amounts are indicative; dealers charge a premium over spot and pay around or below spot when buying. Aevumex sells no metal and gives no advice.
