What is a Krugerrand?

The Krugerrand is a South African gold coin struck since 1967 by the South African Mint with gold from the Rand Refinery. It contains exactly one troy ounce (31.1035 grams) of fine gold in a 916.7 fine (22 karat) alloy with copper, which gives the coin its reddish colour and scratch resistance. The coin therefore weighs 33.93 grams, while its gold value covers only the 31.10 grams of fine gold.

The obverse shows Paul Kruger, president of the South African Republic; the reverse shows the springbok, the year and the weight. The Krugerrand has no face value in rand: its value is the gold price plus a premium.

History

The Krugerrand was created in 1967 to sell South African gold directly to private buyers, at a time when private gold ownership was still restricted in many countries. In the 1970s and 1980s it held more than 90 % of the world market for bullion coins; sanctions against the apartheid regime made imports into the US and Europe impossible for a while, which opened the door for the Canadian Maple Leaf and the American Eagle. Fractional sizes of 1/2, 1/4 and 1/10 ounce exist since 1980, and a 1 oz 999 silver Krugerrand since 2017.

Buying, selling, VAT and tax

Premium. As the most traded coin, the Krugerrand carries one of the lowest premiums over spot: usually a few percent for the 1 oz, more for the small sizes. When selling, a dealer typically pays around or slightly below spot. The gap between the two is the spread; the smaller the coin, the larger it is in percent.

VAT and tax. The Krugerrand is investment gold under the EU directive (at least 900 fine, minted after 1800, legal tender) and therefore VAT-exempt in the Netherlands and Belgium. In the Netherlands it counts as an asset in box 3 on 1 January. Information, not advice.

Authenticity. Weight (33.93 g), diameter (32.77 mm) and thickness (2.84 mm) are so well known that deviations stand out; a magnet must do nothing. The 22-karat alloy and the detailed springbok are hard to imitate.

FAQ: Krugerrand

How much is a Krugerrand worth?

The gold value of a 1 oz Krugerrand is the gold price per gram times 31.1035; it is shown live at the top of this page. A dealer charges a few percent above it, and pays around spot when you sell.

How much gold is in a Krugerrand?

Exactly 31.1035 grams of fine gold (one troy ounce). The coin weighs 33.93 grams because copper is added for hardness; the copper carries no value.

Why is a Krugerrand 22 karat and not 24?

The copper alloy makes the coin harder and scratch-resistant, practical for a coin that changes hands often. The fine weight equals that of a 24-karat one-ounce coin.

Do I pay VAT on a Krugerrand?

No. The Krugerrand meets the EU definition of investment gold and is VAT-exempt in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Is an old Krugerrand worth more than a new one?

Not in gold value: every year contains the same ounce. A few low-mintage years carry a collector premium, but most years trade at the gold price.

Source and method

The metal value is the fine weight times the spot price per gram, fetched every minute from metals.dev and converted to euro at ECB rates. See the gold price page for the chart going back ten years. Amounts are indicative; dealers charge a premium over spot and pay around or below spot when buying. Aevumex sells no metal and gives no advice.
