What is a Gold Maple Leaf?

The gold Maple Leaf is a Canadian bullion coin struck since 1979 by the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa. The 1 oz version contains 31.1035 grams of gold at 999.9 fine (24 karat), so it weighs exactly its fine weight. The obverse shows the Canadian monarch, the reverse the maple leaf.

Because the gold is pure, the coin is softer than a Krugerrand and more prone to scratches, which is why it is usually kept in a capsule or in its original packaging.

History

The Maple Leaf appeared in 1979 as an answer to the Krugerrand, which sanctions against South Africa had made unavailable in many countries. Canada chose 999 and later 999.9 fine, making the Maple Leaf the first 24-karat bullion coin. Since 2013 the coin carries a laser-engraved micro maple leaf with the year and a radial line pattern as security features; since 2015 coins can be verified through the Mint's Bullion DNA system. Fractional sizes arrived in 1982 and the one-gram Maplegram in 2014.

Buying, selling, VAT and tax

Premium. Similar to the Krugerrand: a few percent over spot for the ounce, more for the small sizes and most for the Maplegram. Around spot when selling; scratched 24-karat coins may fetch slightly less than pristine ones.

VAT and tax. Investment gold, VAT-exempt in the Netherlands and Belgium. Box 3 on 1 January in the Netherlands. Information, not advice.

Authenticity. The laser-engraved micro maple leaf under the large leaf, the radial line pattern and the exact dimensions (31.10 g, 30.0 mm, 2.87 mm) make the Maple Leaf one of the easiest coins to verify.

FAQ: Gold Maple Leaf

How much is a gold Maple Leaf worth?

The gold price per gram times 31.1035 grams for the 1 oz coin; the value is shown live at the top of this page. Dealers add a premium of a few percent.

What is the difference from a Krugerrand?

Both contain one ounce of gold. The Maple Leaf is 24 karat and weighs 31.10 grams; the Krugerrand is 22 karat and weighs 33.93 grams because of the added copper. Gold value is equal; the Krugerrand is more scratch-resistant, the Maple Leaf has modern security features.

Do I pay VAT on a Maple Leaf?

No, the gold Maple Leaf is investment gold and VAT-exempt in the EU. The silver Maple Leaf is not; VAT applies to it.

Why does my Maple Leaf have small scratches?

24-karat gold is soft. Small marks from packaging or handling are normal and change nothing about the fine weight, but keep the coin in a capsule.

How do I check whether a Maple Leaf is genuine?

Weigh and measure it, look for the laser-engraved micro maple leaf with the year under the large leaf, and when in doubt use a dealer with a Bullion DNA scanner or an ultrasonic test.

The metal value is the fine weight times the spot price per gram, fetched every minute from metals.dev and converted to euro at ECB rates. See the gold price page for the chart going back ten years. Amounts are indicative; dealers charge a premium over spot and pay around or below spot when buying. Aevumex sells no metal and gives no advice.
